2:00 – 3:00 PM; Keynote Speaker presentation: Maria Elena Bottazzi, Ph.D., FASTMH*

Topic: Transformational and Adaptive Leadership in Tropical Medicine: Academic Creativity, Strategic Alliances and Diplomacy

Duration: 1 hour including Q & A.


Maria Elena Bottazzi is an internationally recognized tropical and emerging disease vaccinologist, global health advocate and cocreator of a patent-free, open science COVID-19 vaccine technology that led to the development of Corbevax, a COVID-19 vaccine for the world. She pioneers and leads innovative partnerships for the advancement of a robust vaccine development portfolio tackling diseases that affect disproportionally the world’s poorest populations, making significant contributions to catalyze policies and disseminate science information to reach a diverse set of audiences. In 2022, alongside physician scientist Peter Hotez, she was nominated by Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher of Texas for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Topic: Value of partnerships and collaborations to address challenges imposed by the COVID-19 Pandemic: Lessons learned and best practices/ Strategies to foster Latinx community’s resiliency during the COVID-19 Pandemic and beyond, both locally and globally: Barriers and victories.

Panelists: The Hispanic Alliance (Greenville), The Alliance Spartanburg, PASOs, Neighborhood Focus, Clemson Rural Health, Charlotte Bilingual Pre-school, City of Clemson

Topic: Representation matters/Celebrating Latinx scholars and students at CU: Sharing success stories of Clemson University’s Latinx faculty and students
